Investing in Education:

Overview:

Kenya is a nation mired in poverty, with 60% of its population society surviving on less than a $1.00 a day and an unemployment rate of 50%- 60%. Reflecting these harsh economic realities are vast slum communities of Kibera and Dagoretti that ring the nation’s capital city of Nairobi. Home to literally hundreds of thousands of children, these communities are ravaged by illiteracy and unemployment, leading to a vicious cycle of violence, abuse, HIV/AIDS, and child abandonment.

Barriers to Education:

One of the keys to breaking out of this hopeless situation is education. It is also one of Kenya’s major challenges as there in no free public high school educational system, but a patchwork of private, church and government tuition funded schools. The result is a constant flow of young children squeezed out of the educational system which perpetuates the seemingly never ending cycle of poverty.

A Hand Up and Way Out!

D4K, though its faith based community outreach program, mentors street kids who have a heart and strong desire to transform their own lives, as well as that of their community.

  • Transitional Educational Program – specializing in teaching life skills to help younger children transition from street life to a more structured setting.
  • Vocational Training: Facilitating student enrollment in vocational schools best matching their skill sets and interests.
  • Finds Partnerships to send boys to Boarding Schools: For primary, secondary and university levels to qualified students committed to improving their life and those around them.
