Born in Dagoretti, Margaret was fortunate to attend both primary and secondary school, and scored well on the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exam. Her academic achievements granted her entrance into the Kenyan Medical Training College to pursue course work in nursing.
The fact that Margaret had achieved so much as a resident of Dagoretti was exceptional, but with no student loan program, her hopes of attending college were far from certain. Her father, a day laborer, earns a few dollars a day when he is fortunate to find work. Margaret’s mother, Grace, tends to family chores without the help of any modern conveniences. These include washing clothes by hand, tending a vegetable and fruit garden, raising chickens, carrying water and cooking over an open coal fire pit.
When needed, Grace and Margaret would also walk up the dirt path to D4K to help prepare meals there for the boys returning from school. Through Grace and Margaret’s faithfulness to help the boys at D4K, they met several volunteers that learned about Margaret’s opportunity to attend college. Through this avenue, Margaret was able find sponsorship for her college tuition. Today, Margaret is 20 years old, and in her second year of college. She is a role model to everyone in her community and D4K. Her goal is to graduate, find employment, bring medical resources to Dagoretti and help her younger brother, Bedan, also attend college.
