The D4K community is totally dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty. Traditionally, D4K has invested heavily in the education of homeless street boys while providing shelter, a caring environment and encouraging the growth of each boy’s Christian faith. Today, D4K has 27 boys in various academic institutions from day to boarding schools, ranging from primary to university level, as well as vocational training.
However, due to the global recession, reliable support from many of our supporters has been negatively impacted. This has jeopardized D4K’s ability to provide sufficient tuition money for several of our boys.
Poultry Farm Project:
In addition to asking for prayer, we have been exploring ways to expand D4K’s horizons beyond education, to include an economic enterprise. D4K is currently in discussion with the poultry industry to potentially qualify as an approved chicken grower (baby chicks – 6 weeks) for one of East Africa’s largest chicken providers. This requires D4K to meet certain professional and facility standards to produce a quality product.
Going forward, D4K aims to build breeding houses on it current facilities and leverage its proximity to urban Nairobi neighborhoods where chicken consumption has grown exponentially. The project will help teach construction, poultry farming and management skills in addition to concepts of self sustainability and reinvestment. Proceeds from poultry farming will be used to supplement school tuition bills and be reinvested in expanding the chicken operation.
Although D4K anticipates several challenges in this endeavor, we believe its economic impact can make a tremendous difference in our future and community.
