Cleaning up garbage in the Village of Dagoretti

As with any growing not-for-profit organization, volunteers have become an important resource and “life line”. With many thanks to D4K founder and current student, Michael Mungai (SJU ’10), Michael has arranged several student trips from Philadelphia to Kenya and Tanzania for purposes ranging from tourism, education, academic research, and D4K assistance.

Volunteers visiting Dagorretti have helped form positive relationships with D4K students and reinforce a lifestyle void of drugs, alcohol and promiscuity. Volunteers are also helpful in bringing awareness to their own local schools and churches about D4K’s mission and opportunities to get involved.

In the summer of 2009, volunteers spent hours playing and building relationships with locals, cleaning up garbage and even took a “village of kids” camping. They also conducted research and purchased materials to help convert an old cow stall into a new “outdoor kitchen” for cooking and meal preparation at D4K. Additional volunteers from Los Angeles and Europe also joined to share in the experience.

Remember Mike? He has been accepted to St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia and needs your help!

Michael Nyambura, once a homeless teenager who helped me win the trust of the street children and film their stories, has earned provisional admission to St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.

I first met Mike next to the slaughterhouse at the Dagoretti Market outside Nairobi in the summer of 2000 after he had been forced to drop out of school and found himself homeless. He worked tirelessly as my translator and guide and submitted to extensive interviews about HIV and life on the streets. Students from Connecticut College helped raise money to send Mike back to school where he later ranked third in his class.

After seeing Left Behind on campus, two students at St. Joe's U. traveled to Nairobi to volunteer helping AIDS orphans and sought out Mike. They encouraged him to apply to college in the United States, and when they returned to campus, helped persuade the university to give him a chance. Mike has been granted provisional acceptance and a scholarship at St. Joe's, and his supporters are raising money for transportation, books and other costs he will face as a student in America.

Viewers who would like to help Mike take advantage of this amazing opportunity can contact Mark Orrs at admissions who is setting up Mike's fund. Mark can be reached at: mo008317@mailhost.sju.edu.
